Walgett pauses to remember the fallen.
The Walgett community, like thousands around the country, paused today to pay respect to all those who paid the ultimate price for their country.
Monday 11 November 2024 marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I.
Today, Remembrance Day remembers all who have given their lives in service, including in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
Mayor of Walgett, Councillor Jasen Ramien laid a wreath on behalf of Council in ANZAC Park at a ceremony hosted by Walgett RSL sub-branch Committee.
“Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, millions around the world pause in silence to remember the sacrifices many have made so we can enjoy life today,” he said.
“This year’s theme for Armistice Day is ‘Honouring Sacrifice and Resilience’, which I think resonates particularly well with our community,”
“It’s an important day where you may personally want to remember an ancestor, relative or friend who has served,”
“Even if you don’t have any personal links to people who have served, the Remembrance Day minute of silence is an opportunity to reflect on what war has cost Australia and the world, and the sacrifices many have made to enable us to live, thrive and grow in our country today and into the future.”
