Walgett Shire Council invites the community to have their say on the future of Kookaburra Court through a series of consultation sessions next month.

Kookaburra Court, formerly an aged care facility, was acquired by Council in 2022. While some members of the community have expressed interest by in restoring it as an aged care facility, financial viability challenges make this a difficult option for any potential operator.

Council now seeks community input to better understand expectations and ideas for the site's future.

The following resolution was adopted by Council in June 2023:

1.     Council consider re-activating the use of this building to accommodate for, but not limited to;

·       Contractors – generally – minimal cost

·       Contractors – Council – minimal cost

·       First responders – minimal cost

·       RFS Training programs – minimal cost

2.     The re-activation be stages with Stage 1 being the 4 rooms and caretakers’ accommodation be prepared for use.

3.     Council’s Property Officer be authorised to prepare the facility for use and seek suitable caretaker(s) from within the community to manage the facility.

4.     Prior to any costs being incurred that a schedule of work/costs/fees be report to Council for approval.

5.     The matter be put out to public consultation and a further report be put to Council, summarising community feedback.

Following the community consultation sessions, a report containing the feedback and community sentiment will be presented to Council at the Ordinary Meeting on 25 March 2025.

As mentioned in the above resolution Walgett Shire Council is considering the activation of Kookaburra Court as an eight-room share house to accommodate essential workers, emergency services personnel, council contractors and employees.

Through these consultation sessions, Council will present this concept and gather community feedback.

Attendees are encouraged to register to receive updates as the project progresses and to ensure everyone has the opportunity to provide input.
