That's a Wrap - Australia Day 2025
Published on 26 January 2025
Walgett Shire Council proudly celebrated the incredible contributions of seven community members and groups during the Australia Day awards ceremony, held at the Lightning Ridge Multipurpose Centre this Sunday. The event, set against the theme "Reflect, Respect, and Celebrate," featured a delicious buffet breakfast and embodied the spirit of community, unity and pride.
General Manager Megan Dixon opened the ceremony, praising the remarkable sense of community, remarking that while it was heartening, it came as no surprise to see people travel from all corners of the Shire to be part of the day. She highlighted the unique and inspiring way the people of the Shire come together to support one another.
Councillor Anne Dennis from the Aboriginal Land Council for the Northwest Region, a proud Gamilaraay woman born on the Namoi Reserve, set a thoughtful tone of respect and reflection that resonated throughout the ceremony.
Local ambassador Jenni Brammall captivated the audience with an inspiring speech about her journey from Sydney to Lightning Ridge. With over 20 years dedicated to the Australian Opal Centre, Jenni spoke passionately about her work preserving the area's opal history while shaping the future of the industry.
Mayor Jasen Ramien addressed the audience, emphasising that the strength of the Walgett Shire community lies in the dedication and unity of each individual. He highlighted that it is the efforts of everyday people that make the Shire a truly exceptional place to call home.
Joined by Ms Dixon, Mayor Ramien proudly presented the nominees and award recipients across six categories, recognising the outstanding contributions of local community champions.
