Dive into a series of impactful R U OK? Day 2023 events across the Walgett Shire this September. R U OK? is on a mission to spark life-changing conversations and build a more connected world through suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Be a part of this meaningful movement!

R U OK? empowers and inspires us all to forge meaningful connections and engage in life-changing conversations with those who might be facing difficulties in our world. You don't need to be an expert just a caring friend and a great listener. Follow these four simple steps to have a conversation that could make a life-changing impact:

  1. Ask, "R U OK?"

  2. Listen attentively.

  3. Encourage action.

  4. Stay connectedcheck in.

In 1995, the world lost the beloved Barry Larkin, a man who wasn't okay. His tragic loss left his loved ones in profound grief and aching for answers. In 2009, his son Gavin Larkin made it his mission to honour his father's memory and protect other families from such heartache with a simple yet powerful question: 'Are you OK?'"

The "Community Working Groups" model enables service and agency input for community services. Local supporters are planning and hosting events in Walgett, Lightning Ridge, and Collarenebri to encourage meaningful conversations and engagement.

On Wednesday the 13th the Council Community Development staff team up with the Ranger Services and the Animal Welfare League for a free dog desexing and microchipping session at Spider Brown Ovals from 9am-11am. They will also be in front of Wellways office on Morilla Street from 2pm-4pm, serving cake, coffee, and conversation, and providing valuable resources and support. Don't miss it!

Then join us on Thursday the 14th in Walgett for a morning tea with refreshments, info, and resources at Memorial Park near the Mission Australia office, starting at 10:30am through lunch.

On Friday the 15th, we'll be at the Healthy Communities shop front in Collarenebri from 10:30am to 12pm.

Our awareness events, in line with the Council's 2017-2027 Community Strategic Plan, are crafted with inputs from residents and services. We prioritise social inclusiveness to engage the entire community in our suicide prevention and support campaign.
