The Walgett Shire Council is pleased by the announcement of funding to support the Lightning Ridge Bore Water Pipeline Project. This critical investment from both State and Federal Governments will address the urgent water security needs of Lightning Ridge, ensuring the health, wellbeing and prosperity of the community.

Lightning Ridge has relied on Bore Pumping System No. 2 as its sole operational water source since 2023, following the decommissioning of Bore No. 1 due to severe infrastructure failures caused by age, corrosion and extreme weather. The new project will see the replacement of 5.1 km of existing pipeline, upgrades to booster pumps and aging pump station components and the installation of advanced monitoring equipment to secure a reliable secondary water supply for the town.

This project is a testament to the strong collaboration between Walgett Shire Council, community stakeholders, and all levels of government. Council sincerely thanks the organisations and community members who supported the funding application and extends its gratitude to the State and Federal Governments for their continued commitment to regional infrastructure.

Mayor Jasen Ramien expressed his gratitude for the announcement, stating, 'Water security is vital for every community and ensuring Lightning Ridge has a safe and reliable supply is a big step forward. I want to thank the State and Federal Governments, including the Hon Mark Coulton, Mr Roy Butler, Mr Dugald Saunders for backing this important project, as well as the large number of community groups who stepped up to offer support. It’s great to see everyone working together to support our community’s future.'”

General Manager Megan Dixon welcomed the announcement, stating, 'the Lightning Ridge Bore Water Pipeline Project will deliver reliable water infrastructure, supporting residents, businesses, and visitors while ensuring the community’s water security and paving the way for future growth.' She added that she, along with Mayor Ramien, has been actively lobbying the government to see this project come to fruition."

Work on the project is set to begin early next year, with Council overseeing its implementation in partnership with stakeholders.
