Mayors Update
The start of 2025 has been a busy one for Council, and I wanted to take a moment to update you on what’s been happening across the Shire.
In late January, Councillors attended induction training. I think I speak for all Councillors when I say it was incredibly valuable. It gave us all a clearer understanding of our roles and responsibilities and allowed us to ask questions and discuss what lies ahead. While the training is mandatory, it’s also essential as it ensures we’re equipped to serve our Shire.
On 28 January, Council held an Extraordinary Meeting to discuss the Walgett Skatepark Tender. After careful consideration, we decided not to accept any of the tenders but instead enter into negotiations. We’re looking forward to seeing progress soon!
Since February, Councillors have been participating in weekly workshops to gain a deeper understanding of major projects and priorities. These sessions have covered key topics like roads and infrastructure, planning and development, economic growth, and our organisational structure. They’re a great opportunity to ask questions, get into the details, and ensure we’re making informed decisions for the community.
Australia Day was celebrated at the Lightning Ridge Multipurpose Centre, and what a fantastic event it was! A huge thank you to the staff and volunteers who made it all happen. It was great to see over 100 people come together to celebrate our local heroes. Congratulations to all our award winners and nominees—you make our community proud!

On 27 January, fires broke out at Narran Lake, quickly spreading to over 4,000 hectares. Within days, it was declared a Section 44 Emergency, with around 60 firefighters and emergency crews working tirelessly to contain it. Thankfully, there was no immediate threat to homes, but with high temperatures and strong winds, fires can escalate fast. A massive thank you to all the volunteers and emergency teams, both local and from across the state, who stepped up to protect our region.
On 14 February, I attended the Border Regional Organisation of Councils (BROC) Meeting in Bingara. One of the key discussions was on the Cellar Doors to Sunset border tourist trail map, which includes Walgett and Lightning Ridge. It’s exciting to see our region being recognised in tourism planning, and I look forward to what comes next.
A few days later, I had the honour of attending the Freedom Ride Anniversary event in Walgett. It was a significant occasion, and it was wonderful to see such a strong turnout. We were joined by dignitaries including NSW Governor Margaret Beazley, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs David Harris, and Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe. The Freedom Ride remains an important part of our history, and it was a privilege to be part of the commemoration.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to Council. Let’s keep working together to make our Shire the best it can be!

WATER METER ACCESS
The Walgett Shire Council requests your cooperation in maintaining clear access to your water meters. This is vital for accurate readings, meter protection, and the safety of our staff.
Failure to access the meter may result in estimated readings, potentially impacting the accuracy of your water usage charges.
Please be mindful of obstacles such as locked gates, unsafe property conditions, aggressive dogs, overgrown gardens, high grass or meters buried under dirt or debris.
For further information contact our Department on (02) 6828 6100 or email admin@walgett.nsw.gov.au
ROAMING DOGS
At Walgett Shire Council, public safety and responsible pet ownership are our top priorities. To address concerns regarding roaming and nuisance dogs, our team conducts regular patrols throughout the Shire.
The Companion Animals Act 1998 states dog owners have a legal obligation to prevent their dogs from escaping the premises. Failure to do so could result in fines if your dog is seized.
Council strongly advises all pet owners to microchip and register their pets to ensure a swift reunion in case of separation.
Let's work together to promote a safe environment for everyone including your pets!
