Walgett Shire Aboriginal Heritage Study
In 2009 Walgett Shire Council commissioned Australian Museum Business Services to prepare an Aboriginal Heritage Study for the Walgett Shire Local Government Area.
The study was jointly funded by Walgett Shire Council and the Heritage Branch of the Office of Environment & Heritage (formerly part of the Department of Planning).
The Aboriginal heritage study is intended to provide information to support:
- An Aboriginal community’s sense of identity – of its beginnings, its present and its potential
- Education programs which assist the Elders to educate and pass on knowledge to both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community.
- A sense of ownership and cultural awareness within the Aboriginal community.
- Heritage tourism strategies
- Future management of Aboriginal cultural heritage within the existing relevant New South Wales and Commonwealth statutory frameworks.
At a meeting held on 26 July 2011, Walgett Shire Council resolved to endorse the land use planning recommendations in sections 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.3, 6.1.4 and 6.1.5 of the study.
